Synopsis
An outpost is located near cigar factory. Micaela appears looking for Jose, but he is still absent. Jose comes along with guard changing. Carmen appears. Being vigorous and daring she got used to rule everybody. Her Habanera sounds like a challenge and the flower thrown down to the feet of Jose promises love. The coming of Micaela distracts the soldier. He recollects his home and mother. Carmen again breaches public order. This time she is the cause of fight and Jose must take her a prison. But charms of Carmen are all powerful. Being conquered by them Jose violates the order and helps Carmen to flee.
It is clandestine meeting of smugglers assisted by Carmen. Escamillo appears. He is always cheerful, assure and courageous and Carmen is not indifferent to him. It´s getting dark. Under cover of night the smugglers are getting prepared to get down to risky business. This time Carmen refuses to join them. Jose comes, but joy of date is brief: military bugle calls the soldier up to barracks. Passion struggles in his soul with duty. Carmen is indignant. Quarrel is upcoming. Suddenly Zuniga appears, Jose´s commander. He is hopping on favor from Carmen. Jose is jealous. Military oath is violated, the comeback way to barracks is cut off. Jose stays with Carmen to begin the new life full with alarms and dangers.
In dead of night the smugglers strike out a deal. Carmen and Jose are with them. The quarrel is not forgotten: there´s the great difference between lovers. Jose suffers from infidelity to duty. Only Carmen´s love keeps him in the smugglers camp. But she does not love him anymore: their break is unavoidable. What the cards will tell her. They predicted happiness to her mates. Only for Carmen the destiny does not promise joy: she read her death sentence in cards. Escamillo comes to date with Carmen. She stops the duel between him and Jose. This moment Jose notices Micaella, who despite the fear came to the smugglers camp to take Jose back home. Jose does not listen to her words. Only the news about death of his mother forces him to leave Carmen. But their meeting is ahead.
It is a bright sunny day. Carmen waits for Escamillo. This moment worn out Jose appears in ragged clothes. He still loves her and is ready to forgive everything if she returns to him. But Carmen rejects his entreaties and having lost patience tears down the ring given to her by Joseas a sign of love. ”Born free will die free”. Her death is unavoidable.
